The Phoenix Front office staff are there to schedule, or reschedule appointments, bill your insurance company, if any, give messages to your counselor, and all the other tasks needed to make the office run efficiently. I have been a counselor for over 25 years.  After graduating from Chapman University, I worked at St. Peter Hospital in Outpatient Psychiatry and have been in private practice for 20 years.  My prior experience was also as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor for the US Army. I see adults as individuals or for couples counseling. My main orientation is as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, but I draw from many therapeutic orientations to meet the needs of my clients.  I see the therapeutic process as one of collaboration, or teamwork between the therapist and the client, to best meet the needs of the client. I see clients with a broad range of diagnosis and issues. I also have extensive training with first responders and Critical Incident Debriefing.

Since 2002, I have enjoyed including EMDR as part of my practice in the treatment of a wide range of issues including traumatic incidences, depression and anxiety, relationship stress and grief and have been impressed with the outcome.  The population I work with range from 18 to 80 yrs of age.

We have the inner wisdom needed to reach our highest potential. I work with the whole person, body, mind, spirit, in the context of individual experience, family, and community.
Clients may withdraw or use substances as a response to trauma, experiencing addiction, depression or anxiety, as a coping mechanism. Clients are the experts of their own experience, and I facilitate the process of change to meet their needs more effectively. Through collaborative work with varied theoretical approaches, I meet clients where they are, develop goals and work through the process of small steps to make changes that shift the outcomes. I work with adults, in individual, couples or family work. I specialize in areas of substance use and trauma.
My areas of interest include PTSD, codependency, domestic abuse and relationship issues, stress and anxiety disorders, depression and grief, sleep disorders, spirituality, and life transitions. I use mainly evidence-based therapies, with a focus on CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy), Motivational Interviewing, CBT, family systems, archetypal and dreamwork, and communication tools. I have 8-years experience in community mental health, after earning my Master’s degree in counseling psychology at St. Martin’s University.

I began my private practice in Olympia in 2011 after 5+ years working in Seattle and Tacoma. While I work with all school age children and their families, my practice tends to focus on Teenagers and their Families who are struggling with ADHD, Anxiety/Depression, and Behavior issues. I take an eclectic approach to work through the situations my clients are going through to accomplish their goals.

Victor L. Steffens, Ph.D., LMHC, CDP

My counseling career began in 1976 in Community Mental Health, after receiving my MSW from the University of Washington.  My private practice began in 1989.  I work with adults, especially those with traumatic and mood related issues.  I’m regarded as steady and having learned to listen well.  In the last twenty years I’ve included EMDR as an often helpful therapy modality in my practice.  Truth in advertising:  my practice these days is part-time and I’ve begun to travel a bit.  Thus, realistically clients choosing to work with me need to find occasional brief interruptions acceptable in their work.

My primary drive for my current vocation is a quest for truth. In the psychotherapeutic relationship, I wait for inspiration in the field that exists between myself and my clients to help elucidate their current lived experience. My interests in psychotherapy and healing are broad and much of my training as a psychotherapist is as well: significant training in Psychodrama/Sociometry/Group psychotherapy, Psychodynamic/Psychoanalysis, EMDR, and a number of different modalities that include a cognitive behavioral perspective. My doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology was completed at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California with a specific focus in Depth Psychology, Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic, Jungian, Archetypal, and Imaginal psychology. My areas of focus in treatment include: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other anxiety disorders; Drug and Alcohol use disorders including Co-occurring disorders (Dual Diagnosis); Mood disorders (Bi-polar disorder/Depression), Personality Disorders, a special interest in the mind-body connection, and the experience of Qi in psychotherapy. I primarily treat adults ages 18-75 and adolescents, in addition to couples.
